Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
