A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
