The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
